Does socialism work economically?
The oldest question in the corpus, argued at every register from Mises citations to Jubilee panels. Note the frame-shift: the modern left mostly declines to defend the 20th-century record and changes the definition of “socialism” instead.
Position A: No — failure is structural, not incidental
Held by: front-page-youtube, stossel-tv, Gene Epstein, the center-right explainer
- The economic-calculation-problem: no capital-goods prices → no rational allocation (Mises); dispersed knowledge can’t be centralized (Hayek) (front-page-2026-socialism-always-fails)
- The natural experiments: East/West Berlin (store variety, Trabant, life expectancy gap erased within 10 years of reunification), Korea, Taiwan/China (unknown-channel-2026-most-misunderstood-word-in-history, soho-forum-2019-capitalism-vs-socialism)
- Venezuela as the live case: 87% GDP/capita collapse, hyperinflation, 7.4M refugees; oil-price and sanctions defenses rebutted (stossel-nd-complete-guide-socialism-vs-capitalism, front-page-2026-socialism-always-fails)
- Incentives: “nobody washes a rental car” (stossel-nd-what-socialist-influencers-get-wrong)
Position B: The question is miscast — 20th-century state socialism isn’t the current proposal
Held by: richard-wolff, hasan-piker, sympathetic explainers
- Wolff: Soviet/Chinese models “left too much power in the hands of too few”; the corrected project is worker-cooperatives/workplace democracy, on which the failure record is silent (soho-forum-2019-capitalism-vs-socialism)
- Wolff’s counter-record claims: Soviet growth the fastest of the 20th century; Chinese growth the best in human history; BRICS > G7 (wolff-2025-teaching-on-socialism — asserted unopposed, verify)
- Piker: capitalism is failing the average person now — housing, healthcare, consolidation; China’s poverty reduction credited to state planning (impact-theory-2025-hasan-piker-young-people-socialism)
- Popular register: “We are the richest country in the world… and we choose not to” (middle-ground-2025-socialists-vs-capitalists)
Rebuttals & Cross-fire
- A→B: Epstein — since Wolff calls the USSR “state capitalist,” his socialism “has never existed” and carries the burden of proof; kibbutzim and Yugoslav self-management are the closest tests and both faltered (soho-forum-2019-capitalism-vs-socialism)
- A→B: China/Vietnam escaped poverty after legalizing markets — Deng’s turn, not planning (stossel-nd-complete-guide-socialism-vs-capitalism)
- B→A: sanctions/CIA interference contaminate every natural experiment (Romer’s Cuba framing; Allende in the genealogy) (new-yorker-radio-hour-2026-megan-romer-how-socialist-is-the-dsa, unattributed-2025-evolution-of-socialism-marx-to-modern-day)
- Neutral referee: “No large-scale market socialist economy has been implemented under democratic conditions, so we lack empirical evidence” (unattributed-2025-evolution-of-socialism-marx-to-modern-day)
- B→A on calculation (added 2026-08-13): the left’s best available answer — the mid-century calculation defeat was a technology constraint, and modern climate finance already performs out-of-market planning (IAMs, stress tests); “Planning is already a reality: we need to take control of it” (jacobin-2022-green-socialist-planning-vs-market). Assessment on the page: it answers Lange’s computational half of the problem while largely bypassing Hayek’s tacit-knowledge half. The lint finding softens from “no left engagement” to “half-engagement.”

Current State
The right’s case is empirical-historical and largely unanswered on its own terrain — the corpus’s left sources respond by redefining the project (workplace democracy, social democracy) rather than defending planning. The genuinely open question is the one with no data: worker-cooperative socialism at scale under democracy. What would move the debate: serious left engagement with the calculation problem, or governance outcomes from Mamdani-era NYC treated as a test.
