2026 New York Congressional Primaries (June 23, 2026)
Date: June 23, 2026 | Type: primary
What Happened
Mayor zohran-mamdani’s three endorsed candidates all won Democratic congressional primaries — the “kingmaker” event that triggered the establishment counter-offensive two days later:
| District | Winner | Defeated | Margin | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NY-7 (open, Velázquez retiring) | claire-valdez (DSA, assemblymember) | Antonio Reynoso (Velázquez-endorsed) | 56.1–35.8 (20.3 pts), ~67k ballots | Most lopsided DSA win of the cycle; deep-blue Brooklyn/Queens |
| NY-10 | Brad Lander | Rep. Dan Goldman (2-term incumbent) | n/a in corpus | |
| NY-13 | Darializa Avila Chevalier (democratic socialist, Columbia encampment organizer) | Rep. Adriano Espaillat (5-term, CHC chair) | 49.3–46 (~3.3 pts) @86% reporting | Fought on Israel/Gaza (“Babies not Bombs”); AIPAC gave Espaillat $140k+ |
Money and endorsements (from 19th-news-2026-ny-primary-results-valdez-chevalier): American Priorities, a new pro-Palestine PAC formed to counter AIPAC, spent >450K in NY-7; Justice Democrats PAC spent >371K on Valdez. NY-7 split the progressive left itself — Velázquez, major unions, and the Working Families Party backed Reynoso against the Mamdani/Sanders/NYC-DSA-backed Valdez. Notably, AOC did not endorse the Mamdani-slate candidates in the marquee House races (she endorsed down-ballot state-legislative DSA candidates instead).
Counter-datum: establishment-backed Micah Lasher won the eight-way NY-12 open-seat race (Nadler/Bloomberg/Hochul backing) — the sweep was of the slate, not the city. Mamdani’s framing: “It’s not just a question of electing more Democrats, it’s a question of electing better Democrats.”
Why It Matters
Two sitting incumbents — including the Congressional Hispanic Caucus chair — fell to Mamdani-endorsed challengers, converting his mayoralty into demonstrated coattails and triggering the 2026-establishment-counteroffensive (the Promise to America pledge launched June 25). The margins also bound the claims: Valdez’s 20-point blowout came in an open safe-blue seat on ~67k ballots; the incumbent kills were far narrower. Avila Chevalier’s win in a majority-minority district feeds is-dsa-too-white in both directions. Related out-of-state: Melat Kiros toppled a 30-year incumbent in Colorado (margin still not in corpus).
