Announcing the Monetization Gateway (Cloudflare Blog)

- Type: primary vendor announcement
Summary
The Monetization Gateway generalizes Pay per Crawl from “charge AI crawlers for pages” to “charge any caller for any resource” behind Cloudflare — web pages, datasets, APIs, MCP tools — via a single control plane for payment policies and access rules, with payment verified at the edge before requests hit the origin. Pricing can be usage-based and variable (e.g., by compute intensity, or charging only unauthenticated users).
Settlement is stablecoin-only (Open USD, USDC) over the open x402 / Pay-per-Crawl protocol: server responds 402 with pricing, client pays on-chain, request proceeds with proof attached. Peer-to-peer settlement with “negligible fees” targeting sub-second completion; fiat comes out via redemption. Status: waitlist / early access as of July 2026. Requires Cloudflare proxying the resource.
Key Claims
- Any resource behind Cloudflare can carry payment rules; verification at the edge.
- Stablecoin settlement (Open USD, USDC) over x402; fiat only via redemption.
- Waitlist status as of 2026-07-01 — not generally available.
- Explicit evolution of Pay per Crawl toward the general agent-payments layer.
Connections
- Entities: Cloudflare
- Concepts: x402 / Pay-per-Crawl, Agent Web, Niche Data Refinery (its “run” phase depends on exactly this)
Contradictions
- None, but an important timing correction to Cloudflare will make 1000+ AI millionaires: the “any resource, paid per request” future is on a waitlist and settles only in stablecoins today — the rails are earlier-stage than the podcast’s enthusiasm implies.
