Agent Web

The internet shifting from pages humans visit to resources AI agents use — and pay for.

Definition

The “old bargain” traded content for search traffic that sites monetized with human attention (ads, email, affiliate). AI agents break it by extracting answers without the visit. The agent web replaces attention monetization with resource monetization: agents request data, call tools, compare products, and pay tiny automatic fees per use. In short: the human web monetized attention; the agent web monetizes useful resources.

Key Properties

  • Machines tolerate fractional-cent metered pricing humans reject; the request itself becomes the transaction (HTTP 402 / x402 / Pay-per-Crawl).
  • Agents need “clean doors”: structured, trustworthy access (APIs, MCP tools, llms.txt) rather than messy human-oriented pages.
  • Emerging stack: messy internet → cleaned data → agent-readable access → callable tools → trust/analytics → optional payment rules. Each layer is a business opportunity.

Examples

  • Cloudflare’s AI Crawl Control, Pay-per-Crawl, and monetization gateway.
  • WebMCP, AEO, AI Search, and Kitesurf as discoverability, action, search, and browsing layers (Everything we launched during Agents Week).
  • A dataset charging per lookup; an API per successful call; a catalog per comparison.

Application to the business

Frames the long-term arc for a Port Huron AI-automation shop: build services now (Agent Readiness audits, Niche Data Refinery data for local verticals) that become agent-payable resources when the rails mature. The claimed window is the next 6–18 months.
