Local Rank Map & Top 3% Metric

A grid map of a business’s Google-Maps ranking across ~169 points in a city, and the Top 3% metric (share of the grid that ranks in the top three) that decides what content to build next.

Definition

A local rank map (a.k.a. geo-grid) shows a Google Business Profile’s ranking position at many points across a city — green = top-3 (visible), yellow = ~4–10, red = untrusted for that service/location. Caleb Ulku runs it (via LeadSnap) as the first diagnostic before any optimization, because it reveals whether a business only wins on proximity (green near the address, red elsewhere) and therefore needs more relevance and authority.

The controlling metric is the Top 3%: the green share of the map. It drives the corpus’s central decision — topical vs. geographic content. You compare your Top 3% to the top competitors’ (their level is your goal, since competitive markets cap out at 25–40% while easy markets reach ~99%), and set a topical-relevance threshold at ~25–50% of the leaders’ Top 3%. Below threshold → build topical supporting content (Google doesn’t yet trust your expertise). At/above threshold → build geographic content (landmark pages) to expand coverage. Grid rank tracking is an established, widely-used local-SEO practice; “Top 3%” is Caleb’s name for the green-share metric.

Key Properties

  • Diagnosis before action — never optimize before reading the map; it tells you proximity-only vs. relevance/authority gaps.
  • Top 3% = green share; positions 4+ count as zero (invisible).
  • Decision rule: below ~25–50% of leaders’ Top 3% → topical content; at/above → geographic content. Getting it backwards wastes months.
  • Geographic targeting focuses on positions 4–6 (cheap to convert to top-3) using landmarks Google Maps/Places API recognizes.
  • Re-run monthly as a continuous loop; the “green zone” should grow outward from the address.
