Local Ranking Factors (Relevance, Proximity, Prominence/Authority)

The signals Google uses to rank local results: relevance (does the business match the query), proximity (how near the searcher is), and prominence/authority (how trusted/well-known the business is).

Definition

Google’s local ranking rests on a documented triad. The primary source is now in-wiki: Tips to improve your local ranking on Google (GBP Help, fetched 2026-09-04). Official language is relevance, distance, and prominence (the intro also says “popularity”). Prominence is “how well-known a business is,” based on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. There is no way to pay for a better local ranking.

Caleb Ulku uses the same triad with different labels: in OWN Your City in a MONTH with This SEO Guide he glosses it as “proof you’re a real business, proof you serve the area, proof other local entities recognize you”; in The BEST SEO Tutorial for Businesses 2026 (Full Guide) (saved as 'The BEST Local SEO Tutorial for Beginners 2026') and the course (How Google and AI Actually Work) he names it proximity, relevance, and trust/authority and treats proximity as the glass you cannot fill. “Authority”/“trust” is his word for official prominence. The Three-Step Method (Low-Competition Ranking Method) is his operationalization: GBP completeness → landing-page alignment → verified citations, then links and reviews.

This is a well-established model matching Google’s public guidance — hence consensus: established, distinct from Caleb’s branded Core 30 / Super Citations framings. The whole system maps onto it: GBP–Website Alignment (Consistency Signals) and Core 30 build relevance; Local Link Building & Authority and Review & Reputation Management are the two prominence inputs Google actually names; the Local Rank Map & Top 3% Metric measures where distance is (and isn’t) carrying you.
