Local SEO
Optimizing a business to rank in geographically-qualified searches — the Google map pack, “near me” queries, and local organic results — as distinct from national/traditional SEO.
Definition
Local SEO gets a business to surface where location is part of the intent (“HVAC repair near me”, “plumber Houston”). Caleb Ulku stresses it is a different game from regular SEO: you rank the Google Business Profile, not website URLs, and the map pack (top three GBPs) captures 60–70% of clicks — rank #4 and you’re effectively invisible. It is governed by the Local Ranking Factors (Relevance, Proximity, Prominence/Authority) triad (proximity, relevance, authority) and, mechanically, by entity alignment between the GBP, website, and content.
Its appeal for service businesses (HVAC, plumbing, legal) is high-intent capture in often-weak competitive fields, so top-3 is achievable in weeks. Across the corpus, the repeated system is: diagnose with a Local Rank Map & Top 3% Metric → fix and align the GBP (GBP–Website Alignment (Consistency Signals)) → build the Core 30 → add authority links → loop on topical vs. geographic content. Increasingly it converges with AI recommendation, since the same entity signals feed LLMs.
Key Properties
- GBP-centric: you rank the profile; the website exists to corroborate it (GBP–Website Alignment (Consistency Signals)).
- Proximity-weighted: rankings vary across a city — visualized with the Local Rank Map & Top 3% Metric.
- Speed hierarchy (per This will rank you #1 AND bring you customers (a.k.a. 'I Spent 10+ Years Ranking Businesses #1. This Ranks the FASTEST')): content SEO (6–12 mo) < citations (1–3 mo) < authority links < GBP optimization (2–6 wk) < hyper-local pages (2–4 wk).
- Trust-signal driven: Super Citations and real-world Local Link Building & Authority over raw backlink volume.
- Contested sub-claim: Caleb says blog content is near-useless for local ranking — sharper than mainstream advice (see Core 30).
- Converges with AI search (GEO / AEO (Getting Recommended by AI)).

Consensus note
No longer single-creator: two independent sources (James Dooley, Nico (AI Ranking)) now corroborate the GBP-centric fundamentals. They also reveal variance — Dooley is far less GBP-centric (channel-agnostic) and disputes the “every page unique” line (Duplicate Content (for Service-Area Pages)). The discipline (local SEO ≠ regular SEO; GBP + reviews + local trust) is established; the specific system (Caleb’s Core 30/rank-map) remains one practitioner’s framework.
